The qualities we look for in an ideal candidate for fire investigator in the private sector include:
  • Properly trained and experienced in fire investigations
  • Nationally certified (preferably IAAI-CFI, etc.), or able to become certified
  • Effective communicator, especially when testifying in depositions or court
  • Court qualified as an expert, or able to become court qualified
  • Ability to express opinions and present factual data that will hold up against other experts and in court
  • Degree in fire investigation, or equivalent experience
  • Criminal investigation experience, or willingness to learn
  • Ability to obtain private investigation licenses in the states in which they work
  • Willing to get a little dirty to discover the truth
  • Continued education through attendance at fire school classes and seminars
